Zadar Croatia Accommodation

November 23, 2010 – 1:56 pm |

Zadar is located in the north of Dalmatia on a flat spit of land on the coast. The city is well protected by the imposing Velebit mountain, which keeps the cold weather from inland Croatia well away. On the seaward side there are more than 300 islands waiting to be discovered. A unique nature experience awaits holiday guests in one of the 5 national parks which can easily be reached on  a day trip from Zadar.

The picturesque old town with its narrow streets is certainly one of the best that can be found in Croatia. Stroll through the “Kalelarga,” the largest street in the pedestrian zone, here you can enjoy an ice cream in the place which once was a Roman Forum. If you need to shop you find most of the well known European brands in the old town.

The stones from the Roman Forum were used to build the church of St Donatus, which is one of the landmarks of Zadar. The church which was built around the 9th century is often used for concerts due to the wonderful acoustics inside.

Accommodation zadar CroatiaEverywhere in the center of the nearly 3,000 year old city you come across reminders of the rich history of Zadar, which meant in ancient times “Jadar.” It was in the possession of the Romans and later the Byzantines and from 9 Century the Croats gained ruler ship over the city. But as the Venetians became the strong power in the region, they took over the city and ruled it for almost 400 years. Although Zadar has been involved in many wars where the city was attacked, there are still historical buildings from the time of the Venetian ruler ship, among others the beautiful city gate with the St. Mark’s lion is a remain from this time in history of the town.

Zadar has a great Varity in terms of accommodation. The offer includes numerous hotels of which the majority is situated in the city part Borik, a few km north of town.
